About Vulcraft

Founded in 1946, Vulcraft is the largest producer of open web steel joist and joist girders in North America. It is among the safest, lowest cost, and most productive steel products companies in the world. It also is one of the oldest operating divisions of Nucor Corporation. Vulcraft employs the latest technology in manufacturing and fabricating in its quest to provide quality products on time and to exact specifications.

Vulcraft has invested in four Canadian production facilities – Wetaskiwin and Nisku, Alberta; Montreal (Pointe-aux-Trembles), Quebec; and Ancaster, Ontario. Vulcraft also has a network of strategically positioned sales offices. For the Canadian customer this means access to extensive industry knowledge, wealth of experience, and a breadth of innovative solutions.

With eleven manufacturing facilities across North America, Vulcraft has been the unrivalled industry leader for several decades.

Safety is at the forefront of our minds when it comes to fabricating, loading and delivering our products to the site. Our products typically carry the weight of floors and roofs in non-residential structures, and we take great pride in gathering the information necessary to design and fabricate products that will safely carry the loads intended for the structure.

Safety

Our motto “Safety First” guides us in everything we do – every day.

Vulcraft’s number one value is keeping each and every one of our teammates safe. Our goal is to be the safest steel company in the world. After all, safety is smart business, and taking care of our customers begins with taking care of the teammates who get the job done.

Certificate of Recognition (COR)

What is COR? A Certificate of Recognition (COR) is a government-approved safety program that awards employers who develop health and safety management systems which meet established provincial standards. Two of our facilities are COR certified with the MHSA and actively participate in the program.

Recognizing Performance

Since 1998, the President’s Safety Award has been awarded to Nucor divisions that record Injury and Illness and DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) rates that are two-thirds below the national average for comparable facilities. Through this program, Vulcraft sets high goals for itself to achieve excellence in safety.

Teammate Wellness

Vulcraft offers its teammates a range of health services and benefits designed to help them thrive at work and at home.

Environmental Culture

Vulcraft built its reputation making the highest quality steel joists and deck from post-consumer scrap steel. Our parent company, Nucor, is the largest recycler in the United States. But we know that our environmental responsibilities cannot start and end there. That’s why all the Vulcraft divisions throughout North America have a strong commitment to the communities and the environments where our facilities are located. We all strive to be "good neighbors" to those who live and work within our communities.

Our History

VULCRAFT – SOUTH CAROLINA

Vulcraft Corporation was founded in 1946 in Florence, South Carolina as an industrial steel fabrication facility. In the fall of 1954, the company began manufacturing long and short span joists exclusively. Vulcraft – South Carolina became a member of the Steel Joist Institute in May 1959 and was subsequently purchased by Nuclear Corporation of America in September of 1962.

1964
VULCRAFT – NEBRASKA

The Norfolk division was Nucor Corporation’s second Vulcraft facility. It began operations in 1964. The Norfolk facility was chosen over 14 other sites because of the community’s strong values and good labor pools. A deck fabrication facility was added to the Norfolk division in 1977.

1967
VULCRAFT – ALABAMA

On April 3, 1967 Nucor purchased the M&S Steel Company of Fort Payne, Alabama. M&S would become Vulcraft – Alabama, one of the few Vulcraft divisions that Nuclear would acquire instead of construct. In 1986, the division relocated to newly constructed facilities in north Fort Payne, Alabama.

1967
VULCRAFT – TEXAS

In November 1967, Nucor Corporation announced that the company would build its fourth steel joist plant in Grapeland, Texas. The plan began operations on April 1, 1968. The Grapeland plant’s employment has more than tripled since 1968 while maintaining superior ratings on safety.

1972
VULCRAFT – INDIANA

In 1972, Nucor’s fifth steel joist plant went into operation in St. Joe, Indiana. By this time, Nucor had launched an advertising campaign to promote high-quality, reliable and low-cost joists streaming out of Vulcraft facilities. Nucor advertised how Vulcraft had its own trucks to assure on-time delivery, and engineers and sales personnel who were willing to come to a job site on a moment’s notice.

1981
VULCRAFT – UTAH

In January 1981, Nucor announced that Vulcraft would construct its sixth steel joist plant in Brigham City, Utah. Production at the plant began in the fourth quarter of 1981.

2000
VULCRAFT – NEW YORK

In 2000, Nucor began construction on a seventh Vulcraft facility in Chemung, New York. The startup of this facility began in the second half of 2001. The Chemung facility represents a continuation of Nucor’s successful value-added strategy.

2006
